Artists paint a better future for child labourers

Show Your Hope
Hope for Child Labourers is an extension of Martin Voorbij’s project Show Your Hope, an extraordinary adventure in images and words. Travelling across Europe and beyond in his big yellow truck since 2003, Martin has been showing ‘hopeful’ art and telling the related stories in fifty countries, reaching hundreds of thousands of people. Show Your Hope aims to stimulate global consciousness. Hope is a universal emotion. It relates to the future, to a better future. Hope is related to communal issues, more than personal subjects. Show Your Hope will not stop until it has completed the program 'Around the World with 80 Questions'. This is a journey around the world to show imagination and action, to transform the universal emotion of hope into reality.

Show Your Hope

Show Your Hope (Montrez votre espoir)

The selection
More than fifty professional artists and art students from twenty countries painted a picture of a better future for working children for the exhibition Hope for Child Labourers. Their paintings, all sized 25 x 35 cm (10 x 14 inch) were especially created for the Global Child Labour Conference 2010, taking place in The Hague, the Netherlands, on 10 and 11 May 2010. The goal of their art is to inspire the participants who will be discussing measures against child labour worldwide. During the conference, curator Martin Voorbij will personally explain the visions of the artists.

The artists express their thoughts and feelings about giving hope to child labourers in so many different ways and styles. They not only express their view on child labour, but also present solutions and alternatives. In their paintings, artists question child labour itself as well as the best approach towards the subject. Is it acceptable for an individual artist to express the 'classical' image of children doing hard labour? Is it appropriate to show the horrible reality of children in the sex industry?

One particular artist was unable to enter into a mood of darkness and pain. Yet, he could not ignore his emotions when thinking about the children working. The question to the artists was actually unfair. To ‘show hope’ is an act of freedom and a matter of choice. To ‘show hope for child labourers’ is a task that has many boundaries and limitations.

Some artists see child labour as a reflection of our society. The most vulnerable become the victims. Other artists compared the abuse of children with the way developing countries are treated by the rich. Most artists plead for a conscious world, a fair market and strong action against those who abuse children, the vulnerable and the helpless for personal gain.

Children should play and go to school, so that they can develop themselves and learn to be responsible towards our planet, their environment and their society. Only then can they can pass this on to their future generations.
